Nadal is now just one grand slam behind Federer's record

In January of 2010, Roger Federer had 16 grand slams to his name and Rafael Nadal had six.

Now, though, Federer is feeling the breath of Nadal behind him as that gap reduced to one this Sunday with the Spaniard's US Open victory over Daniil Medvedev.

Only one title separates the two tennis greats after Nadal's fourth American major took him onto 19 grand slams, while Novak Djokovic is a little further behind with 16.

The beginning of next season is exciting and the mid-January Australian Open will bring the story back into the limelight.

It'll be the first time that the Spaniard will have had the chance to level with the Swiss, but Djokovic has warned that he wants to be in the conversation too.

For now, though, it's Nadal and Federer at the top of the game.

"I don't know if I'm going to win another one at 38," Federer said after falling out of this year's US Open.

"I don't have a crystal ball."

Nadal digs deep to win the US Open

It seemed that Rafael Nadal was cruising to victory in the 2019 US Open final against Daniil Medvedev, but the Russian came back from two sets down to force a fifth set and that's when the world number two eventually got the job done. Nadal won the match in New York 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4, a contest that lasted four hours and 48 minutes. It was an incredible match, with Medvedev doing a brilliant job to stay in it after Nadal won a tight first set and a more comfortable second set. The Spaniard even led 3-1 in the third, but Medvedev was able to keep firing and he embarked on a run that took Nadal some time to stop. Nadal broke his opponent in a 28-shot rally to go 3-2 up in the decisive set, but the drama wasn't done there. They each lost their serve once more, before Nadal served for his fourth US Open championship - and eventually sealed the deal.

Injury rules Eden Hazard out of LaLiga opener

The Belgian international sustained a thigh injury that is expected to rule him out of action for approximately three weeks and will cause him to miss the game in Vigo. Eden Hazard will not play in Real Madrid's LaLiga 2019-20 season opener in Vigo. The new Real Madrid player has dealt with a major blow on the eve of the new Spanish league campaign after the club confirmed that the Belgian has sustained a thigh injury which is anticipated to rule the player out of action for three to four weeks.
