LOVE, LIES AND DIVORCE

‘I am glad we really found out time to do this… I missed you guys.’ Zainab smiled and set the table for her two friends.
The id-el-kabir celebrations were still ongoing and she’d chosen that special day to celebrate with Amaka and Edima.

Love, Lies And Divorce – Episode 1

‘Uhmmmm….this  taste awesomely nice.’ Edima dipped the rice pancakes into the peppery sauce that was offered.
‘It’s called Masa in hausa, you should try the Dambu Nama, flaked meat.’ Zainab instructed and observed that her other friend had been strangely quiet.
‘So where is your husband and the kids?’ Edima wondered why the house was awfully quiet. She’d been friends with Zainab for long and knew what Zainab’s house could be like when her children were around. She had been married for ten years now and the union was blessed with Aisha, Umaima and Abdulkhadir, her three children.
‘Oh about that, Abdul decided to take the kids shopping, you know they’ll return to school after the holidays. But I think he planned to take them to the movies…that man can spoil his children dirty!’ Her eyes gleamed with admiration for the man she had married.
Abdul was the love of her life, her first love and their marriage was the most perfect of her friends’. God had blessed her. She counted herself lucky to be  with a man that devoted all his time and attention to her, a man that wasn’t ready to take other wives. Abdul was just the right man for her.
‘Wow! Hearing you talk about your family like this, makes me miss him.’ Edima lowered her eyes and focused on the dish, her appetite suddenly disappeared and she resumed thinking about the man that had broken her heart… How could he?
‘Are you seriously doing this right now?’ Amaka lifted her brow and wondered why Edima would be this emotional, it had been three long years yet she couldn’t get over him.
‘Now, that’s cruel Amaka…have pity on her for once.’ Zainab moved over to where her friend sat… Tears had begun to stream down her cheeks
‘Whatever….’ Amaka shrugged and left for the kitchen. She needed to think, she needed a drink but knowing Zainab and her religious nature, she didn’t expect to find a tinge of alcohol in there so she chose to move outside for some air.
‘Darling it’s okay…I understand how you feel, I know you loved Fred but he is gone. Wherever he is, he would want the best for you, he would want you to be happy….okay?’ She squeezed her shoulders lightly.
‘I don’t know Zee, I just keep thinking about him, I miss him so much…how could death be so cruel?’ She swallowed a sob and took the hankie Zainab offered.

Frederick Bassey her late husband had died three years ago. There was no man for her save for him but that fateful day he got involved in a car crash that ended their six months marriage. She relived the memories of their young marriage… She wished he would come back to life… But there she was, sad and alone.
Her friends had been her pillar and without them, she would have committed suicide a long time ago as she’d become very depressed after her husband’s demise.
‘Stay here, let me talk to Amaka, something isn’t right with her.’ Zainab rubbed her hands on her skirt and walked outside.
‘Hey, what’s wrong with you? Having a bad day?’ Zainab walked towards her other friend.
‘I don’t want to talk about it. Have you heard from Lola?’ They had planned to spend the day together and at Zainab’s place but she still wasn’t here….
‘No, you know her, she is always the late one.’ Zainab replied as her lips widened. She loved her friends so much and she was glad they’d come to spend time with her.
‘Sly cheated on me.’ Amaka replied curtly
‘Excuse me?’ The words were alien to her ears.
‘You heard me, the idiot confessed it this morning. He had been shagging his secretary but lied to my face that it just happened once and he is sorry. I don’t know what to believe Zee, I am hurting. I don’t know if I can ever trust him again.’ A tear slipped down her cheeks
‘My god, how could Sylvester do something like that? He seemed so responsible….’ Zainab was stunned.
Sly and Amaka had been married for five years now and they had a child, Odinaka…. They seemed perfect and happy. Why on earth would Sly do such a thing?
‘I don’t know Zee… I am confused. He broke my heart. Do you think I can ever forgive him?’ She looked into her friend’s eyes searching for answers.
Zainab’s marriage was perfect, her husband was faithful and down to earth, he never gave her any problems, so they’d always looked up to her for advice.
‘Yes you will, you just need time dear, you will heal eventually.’ Zainab replied and hugged her friend.

‘Hello girls… Do you think Lola is still gonna make it? It’s getting late.’ Edima had decided to come out and get some air, she was suffocating inside.
‘uhmmm, let’s see…’ Zainab released her friend from the hug and rubbed her hair thoughtfully.
‘Don’t you get to remove that?’ Edima chewed on the rice pancakes, wondering why her friend had to wear her Hijab all the time.
‘It’s her crown girl, leave Zee alone.’ Amaka chuckled softly
‘Well, it’s my choice…’ Zainab ignored her friend’s teasing, glad they both now were okay.
‘I am sorry I sounded that way Edima, I had no right to sound so rude to you. Forgive me…’ Amaka  was remorseful.
‘It’s okay, I totally understand, we all have bad days.’ Edima smiled and warmed up to where Amaka sat.
Just like old times, they laughed and gossiped, only that one person was missing…

Love, Lies And Divorce – Episode 2

She had gone out to buy some meat from the frozen store down the street, Femi  hadn’t spoken to her for days now, ever since their last fight.
She had been married to this man for six years now but they had one issue… His family wouldn’t stop interfering in the marriage.
Maybe he encouraged them as their constant visiting had led to their last fight.
‘You do not like my people? What’s wrong with my niece coming over here so she could stay with us and go to the University from here?’ he’d yelled angrily.
‘I am not saying anything is wrong but we can give her money for the hostel. We need our privacy Femi. We don’t even have children yet, we should be focusing on that.’ she’d replied calmly.
But he’d said the most hurtful thing to her….
‘You’re talking about children? Our inability to have kids is clearly your fault. You are barren Lola, face it!’ He spat those bitter words that left her crying all night.
But that pain wasn’t as enormous as what she faced right then.
He wasn’t in the house when she’d left, he’d written her a note telling her he’d be gone to the barber’s shop to get a clean shave.
So on her return, she was a bit shocked to find his car well parked and the door she’d locked was open.
‘Femi?’ she’d called but there was no answer.
She dropped the meat into the freezer and poured herself some yoghurt that Zainab had prepared herself. Speaking of Zainab, she pulled out her pocket diary and realized they had a date.
‘Gosh!’ She was going to be late and the other girls would be so mad. She gulped the contents of the glass hurriedly and decided to take a shower. She needed this, she needed to see her friends. It had been a very long time.
‘Femi? Please talk to me?’ She called again but there was no answer. Then she walked slowly at first towards his bedroom to spy on him. As she approached, she heard the sounds… What was that?
His door was slightly parted and the moans of the woman became louder… She saw her husband of six years thrusting in and out of the lightskinned young lady on her matrimonial bed… Yes, each bed in the house was sacred.
‘Femi!!’ she screamed and they broke apart that moment but they soon ignored her and continued.
‘Close the door Lola, can’t you see am busy?’ Mockery laced his voice.
‘Come here darling….’ The young woman drawled, ignoring her completely.
She was lost, what could she have done? She was still lost as she moved to the kitchen and sat on the tiled floor.

This wasn’t the man she’d seen while dating Femi. Yes, he’d cheated on her severally but he’d been a little too bold this time around.
Pain soured through her, numbness embraced her bones and her thoughts flew across the skies. How could a man bring his mistress home? How could he make love to her in their own home? It only meant one thing, Femi had no respect whatsoever for her.
She picked up her phone, hesitant and confused… Was it right to tell Zainab and the girls what had happened? Why was she always the unlucky one?
Out of their four marriages, hers had been on the rocks right after the honeymoon. Femi had been one of the nicest guys back on campus but after they got married, he suddenly changed… or did he change? Had he always been like this? Had she been blinded by his looks and flamboyance?
She had come from a very lowly family. She met Femi in her first year at the University and they had both fallen in love with each other. There was no denying the attraction between them. He loved and adored her very much.
There was nothing as precious to him as Lola back then. But after the marriage, he changed totally. He still cared for her no doubt, he’d told her to stay back and look after the house so she’d declined the jobs that she’d been offered by some foreign companies and became a housewife.
Femi always paid the bills. He bought her clothes and jewelries.. When It came to provision, he was the perfect man but his ways weren’t straight when it came to the marriage bed. Femi was an unrepentant infidel.
This had done it, grief choked her throat and she groaned in pain… How could he hurt her like this?  She couldn’t believe Femi had the heart to unleash such cruelty but she wasn’t dreaming, it was real.

‘Zee… I cannot make it…. I am in trouble…don’t wait up for me….’ Without thinking, she had dialed Zainab’s number and spoken those words hurriedly.
‘Hello? Lola, what’s wrong? Talk to me… Did something bad happen?’ The anxiety in Zainab’s voice was glaring.
‘It’s Femi, he brought a woman to the house. I don’t know what to do, I am totally confused.’ she sniffled.
‘Hey, calm down it’s okay. Are you sure you really wanna be in that house? Why don’t you come over to my place and spend the night?’ What Femi had done was despicable.
‘I don’t know Zee, I think I’m going crazy… Can you call back later?’ Lola brought the call to an end when she heard footsteps approach the kitchen.
‘Are you done reporting me to your stupid friends?’ Femi walked into the kitchen, leaned on the cabinet and studied his wife briefly.
‘Is that all you have to say after bringing that whore into our house?’ Indignation rose to her neck as her fair complexion became a bright red… How dare he?!
‘Our house? You serious about that? I built this house with my money so, stop saying ‘our’…’ he scoffed and fetched himself a beer from the fridge.
‘Why are you doing this Femi? Why are you hurting me? If I have done anything wrong, you should tell me…’ tears flowed unrestricted from her eyes.
‘Hey! Hold up, why are we even speaking to each other? My life ended the day I married you Lola, can’t you see?’ he swallowed the drink greedily.
‘How could you say something so callous? Do you think I’m some toy made in China? You think I’m some inanimate object? I’m human Femi, I have feelings…’ she wiped her face and launched a plate at him.
‘Wow, great move’ He dodged and moved from where he stood.
‘I want a divorce.’ He spoke curtly.

‘What?’ Maybe she hadn’t heard him well, the words faded the moment he spoke them.
‘I want my freedom Lola. Marriage was never for me. I don’t wanna be with you anymore so just go wherever… I’m done here.’ He licked his lips and drank some more.
‘No, this cannot be happening. No Femi, You can’t do this to me.’ Her sobs increased. How could he throw to the birds everything they had shared.
‘It is happening baby. I know you married me because of my wealth. I promise you, you wouldn’t lack anything even after the divorce. I just want to be free…’ he continued  and almost chuckled at her dramatic display.
‘No, you are drunk, that’s the beer speaking to me right now. You’re sick if you think I’m gonna let you dump me just like that. We’re in this together, for better and for worse. Please Femi I love you…can’t you see? I loved you from the first day we met in the library. My heart is in your hands, please don’t break it.’ She walked towards him and held his hands. She sought warmth, she yearned for comfort in his hands but they were cold, just like his eyes.
‘I am being honest. What have you offered me, Lola? I needed children, this would be our seventh year in marriage and it isn’t working out as we planned. How many doctors? How many hospitals have we visited? Just look at me. Look at us. We weren’t  like this before. We need to go to our separate ways. I’ve already called a lawyer, he’s arranged the papers, I just need you to sign it, thank you.’ He released her arms and began walking out the door but her question stopped him.
‘Wait, Femi… Are you doing this because of your family? Did you ever love me for real?’ Her eyes burned with fresh tears as she waited for the truth.
‘No Lola, I am doing this for me. And as for your other question.. Yes, I once loved you but love fades.’ He turned around and left.
‘God, let this not be real! Where do I start from? How do I get over him?’ All her life, she’d lived for this one man and he’d betrayed her. He’d broken his promises to her.
‘I might just have to take Zainab’s offer….’ She whispered fearfully as she tried to shake off the burden that weighed heavily on her.

Love, Lies And Divorce – Episode 3

‘You’ve been out all day. You left me and Odinaka alone.’ Sly wondered what had kept his wife this long from home.
She’d told her she had a date with Zainab and the other girls but he never expected it to be this long. He missed her dearly.
Amaka was still mad at him for having an affair with his secretary. He felt guilty for what he’d done, his conscience pricked him day and  night and he had no other option than to speak to their pastor about it.
‘Your wife owns you, she owns your body, and you have soiled it by sharing what belongs to her with another woman. Many men wouldn’t do what you’re doing right now. They would neither show remorse or confess their sins to their wives. I’ll advise you to take one day to fast and pray about it. Repent of your sin, after which you confess to your wife. Make her understand that it happened only once and you’re willing to forgo that secretary of yours. Be more careful in future, Brother Sylvester.’ Pastor  Ike had advised him.
He loved Amaka with his dying breath. She made him happy as she respected him and treated him with utmost love and care. But he’d failed her greatly and he regretted it deeply. The problem was that Amaka was a very unforgiving person, she kept grudges a lot. That was her only flaw.
‘And now I am back, sweetheart, did you miss mummy?’ She ignored her husband and picked up her little son.
Sly had always been the perfect husband, till he cheated on her with his stupid secretary which he was still shagging for sure.
‘I made us dinner….’ Sly rose to his feet and got her bag. When was she going to get mad at him? When would she cry?
After taking the Pastor’s advice and telling Amaka about his  misgivings, she simply looked him in the eye like she hadn’t believed what he told her.
After moments of being silent, her eyes which had turned cold faced him in challenge.
‘Well Sly, since you have broken your vows to me, since you now enjoy the company of other women, I think I am also free to enjoy myself.’ She hissed and went back to sleep. That was two days before.

‘I already ate at Zee’s… Goodnight.’ She walked away from him before he could say anything. Why was she making this difficult than it already was?
‘Damn Doyin!’ He hit the table angrily.
He had no excuse for falling into her trap. It had only happened once and he hadn’t hesitated in firing her after the incident. He loved Amaka that much… but how long would she give him the silent treatment?
He needed to talk to her. He loved his angel so much but his only wish was for her to forgive him…to yell at him…to do something. Her silence was the worst punishment.
He shrugged and followed her towards their bedroom.
‘What are you doing now?’ Sly raised his brows as she tied the baby to the back and started packing some boxes, his heart raced…was she leaving him?
‘Moving to my room Sly. This isn’t the time, just get out of my way.’ Amaka ignored him and continued gathering the few things she needed.
‘Your room? But we agreed not to have separate rooms….’ He was relieved she wasn’t leaving him.
‘Yes we did dear husband, but that was before you slept with Doyin. I cannot sleep on that bed with you knowing you found pleasure in the arms of another woman.’ She had to avoid him for some time and getting her own room was the best thing.
‘Amaka, I am sorry. It only happened once and she’s been fired..so there’s no need for you to worry. I know I broke your heart and it’s going to take some time but just stay right here with me’ he went on his knees.
‘Wow, slow down, so that’s supposed to make me feel better? That you have fired her? Do you think I am a fool Sly? You got that office romance thing going on since before our marriage. I guess I must have been to blind. I so hate you right now… Get out of my way!’ She tried to move forward but he stopped her…..
‘Amaka, please remember the love we shared. Please don’t let it die. It was a mistake’ He held her hands but she pushed him off forcefully and went out of the room.
‘God help me, I cannot do this alone…’ He turned and scanned the room which now seemed empty as his angel was gone.

‘Can you stop that and finish your food?’ Zainab wondered what Abdul was typing, he’d seemed a lot busy the previous week. Maybe it had to do with the celebrations.
‘Do not be angry with me baby, Alhaji Tako called me earlier in the day and asked me to see him tomorrow. It seems he has a contract for me.’ Abdul smiled at his lovely wife, he was so proud of Zainab.
‘Engineering was never easy. Now drop the phone and finish your food darling.’ Zainab relaxed against the chair, she was unhappy about her friend’s situation.
She’d known Femi for some years now and he had always been ruthless in his womanizing, he never spared Lola the embarrassment.
Now he finally had the nerve to take one of his prostitutes home. If only Lola would hearken to her, she needed to change her environment. Staying in that house wasn’t healthy for her, she needed to be alone for some time and think through the matter. What was Femi really after? What did he want?
‘So are you proud you married a Civil Engineer?’ Abdul gulped generously from the glass. His wife wasn’t totally happy, although he’d bought her some gifts as well as the children. Did her countenance have something to do with him? He hated to upset Zainab, she was the perfect woman for him.
‘Yes dear, I am.’ His faced beamed with smiles as she replied his question.
‘So baby, did you see the lingerie I bought you? We should try something new tonight. I miss having you in my bed…’ he hoped the children weren’t close by.
‘Abdul! I saw them but I cannot wear such obscene clothes, they are meant for those who work in brothels. A muslima shouldn’t be found wearing such things….’ She voiced her displease with his gift.
‘Okay, I am sorry my wife, but are you kissing me tonight?’ It had been a long time since they’d made love…
He understood her reasons but he couldn’t wait any longer, three weeks was a long time. Zainab had been very busy preparing for the Celebrations and she was part of the executives in the MWOL (Muslim women Organisation Lagos) so he knew than to bother her.
‘Tonight? I don’t know Abdul. You know I had a date with my friends, I am a bit fatigued but we’ll see…’ she peered at the clock and wondered if Lola was still going to make it.

‘Speaking of your friends… How are they? Haven’t heard much from Lola, is she okay?’ Abdul always favored her. She reminded him of his wife sometimes. A closer look at the two would make one think they were related.
Lola was tall, slender, light skinned and had the most attractive form. Her lips weren’t full but  slightly thin. Her nose was sharp and angular and her eyes were golden and bulky. She was a very beautiful woman.
But not as beautiful as his Zainabu. His wife was the most lovely woman, though he was Fulani, she was  a hausa woman. She was five feet plus and her hair was quite long as it fell  beneath her shoulders. She was very lightskinned and her lips were pink and pale but the smile that came from them could tame a raging lion. Her nose was broad and finely placed on her oval face. Her eyes were wide and dark brown.
‘I don’t know baby but they would be fine’ She didn’t make it a point of duty to expose her friends’ marital problems to her husband but when their problems were about to swallow her peace, she had no other option than to spill.
‘Do you want to talk about it?’ he asked gently and reached for her slender fingers.
‘Should I? We’ve both had a long day, maybe we should get some sleep.’ She returned.
‘Tell me Zee… Talk to me. It kills me whenever you’re like this, like you’re carrying the weight of the world.’ She was so caring and that alone had its consequences.
‘Lola had a fight with Femi. I told her she could come stay the night, I hope it is okay? As she sounded so hurt on the phone…’ Zainab sought his permission.
‘Anything you want baby, whatever makes you happy. This house also belongs to you…’ he gave her hand a squeeze.
‘I love you baby… You’re the man behind my smile. Thanks for being there for me whenever I need you.’ She smiled at him.
‘Hey, don’t be too hard on yourself. Your friends are my friends too. Maybe I should talk to Femi… What do you think?’ He inquired thoughtfully. Not that he was very close to the man but his behavior towards Lola was degrading.
‘No baby, let’s stay out of it, they’ll sort themselves out somehow.’ Zainab protested.
He was about to say something when the door flung wide revealing a fearful Lola

She looked so fragile and vulnerable…
‘I guess she took my offer…’ Zainab rose to welcome her friend.
‘Good evening….i am sorry I barged into the house like this…it’s just the dogs…..their  barking and growling terrified me…’Lola placed her hands on her chest.
‘welcome Lola, I am sorry about that…you know how much I love dogs….’ Abdul gazed at her slowly…had she been crying?
‘darling? Could you go to the room and check on the kids’? Zainab deliberately sent her husband away…she needed to comfort her friend, one look at Lola would tell anyone that she needed to talk to someone…
‘did you really have to do that? Hope I didn’t interrupt anything?’ Lola forced a smile as she took a seat…
She always envied the peace and harmony Zainab’s marriage offered…she always wished Femi could turn a new leaf and they’d  such a beautiful family…but Femi was a devil…
‘No, you just came at the right time’ Zainab replied…
‘I’m sorry I missed the date…I am really….’ She gestured with her hands
‘it’s okay…are you ready to talk now? Is the woman still with him?’ Zainab stared at her face intently …like she was trying not just to read a book but to comprehend the words written on it…
‘yes she is gone…but I’ll tell you everything tomorrow…all I need is some rest right now…..’ she avoided Zainab’s piercing eyes…
‘that’s fine…let me go prepare you a bed….’ Zainab picked her bags and disappeared for a while….
‘I can’t believe this is happening to me….i am officially a divorcee…’ Lola  chuckled softly …but the sound didn’t appeal to her ears…she was going crazy and it all had to do with Femi…
‘it’s ready dear…. ‘ Zainab retuned minutes after and led Lola towards the room.

‘how are the kids? Is  Umaima ten yet? I promised to buy her a gift on her tenth birthday…’ Lola loved spending time with children…why couldn’t God bless her with one?
‘she would be ten nextweek, get that gift ready…maybe you should see them before they sleep…’ Zee chuckled softly
‘yes, that’s a good idea…what does Umaima like?’ Lola rubbed her chin…
‘Only Umaima can answer that’ Zainab replied and pushed the door open…and found her husband playing with the kids.
‘Abdul! I told you to put them to sleep….’ Zainab shook her head  as she picked up the medium sized pillows they’d thrown carelessly on the floor…
‘Aunt  Lola…’ the kids surrounded her and she held herself from crying…why was life so cruel? All she wanted was something as beautiful as this?
‘are you angry with me dear wife’? Abdul pulled Zainab to his laps and gave her a brief kiss…she pushed him away gently as she hated amorous display before her kids.
‘so  daddy took us shopping today…guess what Aunt Lola? I have a new shoe….’ Umaima grinned excitedly….
‘wow, I am happy for you….’ Lola smiled and looked up and found his dark eyes on her…his eyes reminded him of Femi’s….
‘Can I show you my new toys’? Abdulkhadir was eager to show them to her…..
‘why not sweetheart? Where is Aisha?’ she was the youngest of the trio….
‘soundly asleep…’Abdul replied and called the kids back to bed…
‘don’t worry, Aunt Lola would have all day to spend with you guys okay? Goodnight my angels…’ Lola waved at them and followed Zainab steadily behind ….
‘the room is lovely….i am happy you could do this for me….God bless you abundantly….’ Lola’s voice was husky with emotion….
‘it’s nothing…friends are for times and seasons as this…sleep well Lola….’ She closed the door gently behind her….

‘how is she now….’? Abdul rolled over and faced his wife as she slipped on her nightgown and lay close to him….
‘she will be fine,…..asking her to come over was the best thing to do…she would get over this…’ she turned and backed her husband…
She needed some sleep as she had a lot to do the next day, Abdulkhadir and Umaima were returning to the boarding house in two days time, she needed to go shopping for their uniforms and stationeries …the holidays were over …
‘how about us? Remember our plans for tonight….’ He snuggled close to her and wrapped his hands all over her…she smelt of jasmine and honeysuckle …
‘baby?….what plans’? she groaned and tried to uncurl his firm arms from her waist…why was her husband bent on being naughty?
‘I need you Zee…can’t you see? A man is dying here you know….’ He pushed her back closer to his hard member…..why were women this naïve sometimes?
‘not tonight Abdul…’ she turned and faced him, to say she married a handsome man was an understatement, Abdulazeez was  very good looking….
He was tall and muscular…his tanned skin was smooth and beautiful to touch…his lips were thin and sensuous…his nose like Most Fulani men, was perfectly pointed but it was his eyes that pleased her greatly….
‘I love your eyes…always dark and gentle…to look at…’ she kissed his forehead and they stayed that way for some minutes…
‘I love yours too…Zainab, I want you to touch me….’ His hands roamed her body…he ached with need and his wife was being coy about it…
‘Am  not in the mood Abdul…I am tired and kind of Unsettled…we will do this tomorrow, I promise….’ She kissed him again…
‘it’s not fair…why do you always starve me….?’ He was getting irritated by her pious behavior…sometimes she acted like making love was dirty…like it was sinful…
‘starve you? But we had sex three weeks ago…come on baby…don’t be inconsiderate…just let me take a rest …we can always do this some other time…’ she pleaded with him….
‘alright, can you give me a hand job’? his eyes were pleading, he was desperate…
‘hand job? What’s  that?’ she sat up suddenly….
‘can I have your hands….?please’? he requested sweetly….
‘sure…have them…’ she handed him her fingers and he dropped them directly on his  crotch…she gasped in shock and pulled her hands away from him….
‘Zee…come on…help a brother out here…’he bit his lip in frustration….
‘goodnight Abdul…a little night of abstainance wouldn’t kill you a bit…sleep well baby…’ she burrowed into the blanket and zoomed off….
‘damn!’ he cursed and fell back on the bed….

Love, Lies And Divorce – Episode 5

She tossed and turned restlessly on the bed… Why couldn’t she get that bastard off her mind?
‘I want a divorce….’ Those words echoed in her brain and she began to cry afresh…where would she start from?
How would she bring herself to tell Zainab and the other two girls about her pieces of a marriage, she was shattered…everything was a blur…her world was dark and gloomy…
She picked her phone and read the messages from her other friends, Amaka and Edima….they were bothered by her absence….
At least that made her smile as she wiped her face with some tissue…her friends cared about her and that was enough….
They would help her pull through the divorce, they would help her get back on her feet and forget Femi forever.
She dropped the phone and searched her bag for a bottled water…she was quite sure she brought some bottles.
She suddenly felt the urge to drink something…her throat burned and itched from thirst….she had been deeply hurt to remember such things as food or water….but right then her insides cried out for food and she knew she was in trouble…
She decided to go to the dining table or the kitchen, if Zainab saw her there she wouldn’t be offended that a guest couldn’t keep her feet at one place.
Frankly, of all her friends, Zee was the most accommodating…she had the kindest heart and purest soul…Zainab was an angel.
She opened the door and walked gingerly towards the dining, she didn’t want to be a nuisance so she walked on her toes till she reached the dining.

Plates were scattered all over the table and she figured she could help herself with some leftover. Zainab must have been very tired…she didn’t  have a maid as she was a housewife who enjoyed doing chores by herself.
She never left her dishes unwashed, tonight was quite different Lola observed as she picked a clean fork and dug it into the porridge yam.
‘Wow…way to go girl!’ She swallowed a delicious piece. Zainab had always been the cook while she had the beauty, Amaka had the pose (madam model) that was what they called her. She was into fashion business….a hard boiled fashionista while Edima was the workaholic. She couldn’t blame her, maybe she deliberately dug her head into work to forget about her late husband, Fred Bassey.
They all had talents and were unique in their own way.
That moment was hers alone, she closed her eyes and savored the meal, nothing had ever taste better, even her husband’s  voice couldn’t stop her from smiling…joy bubbled inside her…but a very deep voice called her back to reality…
‘Good morning Alhaji, I got your message, I would come with my boys tomorrow…’ Abdul stared at the clock, it read twelve midnight…he hadn’t wanted to disturb Zainab’s sleep, that was why he came to the parlor to answer the call.
‘Alright sir… S’ai gobe…’he ended the call and focused on her.
‘Abdul…!’ she gasped… he’d frightened her.
She observed he had changed into a black sutan that was a bit lengthy and made him look like some ancient warrior…..Zainab’s husband was a very attractive man but not as her Femi.
‘Lola? Sorry I scared you… One of my clients called.’ He stuttered and walked closer to her…his eyes raked her whole body and he felt blood rise to his brain…this was dangerous… He decided to turn back.
‘Abdul?’ She wondered why he looked frightened.
‘Yes?’ he swallowed and walked towards her.
Her breasts were bare in the nightgown she wore….their shape was round and perfect and her nipples were peach colored…they glowed under the light.

Her slender neck  was smooth and he felt like caressing her.
‘Nothing…’ she pushed the plate away and blushed as his eyes travelled down her dress? She suddenly felt nervous…what had she gotten herself into?
‘I have to go Abdul…Goodnight.’ her smile was shaky as she rose to her feet…Why did he have to be this fine? His eyes darkened with desire and he looked more handsome.
‘Wait…’ he held her hands gently.
‘What’? her legs now felt weak.
‘I am sorry…’ he traced a fine line on her face with his fingers and covered her mouth with his… She wouldn’t let in him at first, her mouth was a bit salty and sweet at the same time… He reveled in the unique mixture and pressed her firmly to him.
His mouth searched hers and found her tongue and she opened up to him willingly, she didn’t understand this new wave of pleasure…she hadn’t felt this way before…not even with her husband or ex-husband.
Butterflies filled her belly and her heart thudded with excitement.
‘Zainab….’ She tried to steady her breath as she pulled away from him….how could she do this to her friend? How could something feel so wrong yet so right? How could sin be this glorious?
‘Doesn’t matter… I’ve always been attracted to you…I want you Lola…I don’t care about your sick husband …he doesn’t know your worth…’ Abdul caressed her hair with his fingers, knowing very well what he was getting himself into.
‘I think I am attracted to you too…but…’ she tried to protest but his kisses wouldn’t forsake her…
‘Let’s go to the kitchen…it’s safer there…’ he whispered and she nodded foolishly.
He scooped her into his firm hands and took her to the kitchen…with one swift move, he put away the lights and searched for her body in the darkness…
They were on fire and couldn’t keep their hands off each other…skin to skin, lips against lips, breath to breath until his hands found their way to her legs and she moaned in pleasure.
He was such an excellent lover.
Without wasting more time…her legs gave way to his request as his hands spread them apart and he began to dance on her and with her…
Together they became one, together they found pleasure and the skies went dark when it was over.
‘What have we done Abdul…?’ Lola felt morbid with regret…what had she done?
‘Something we would do again….’ he smacked her backside and kissed her mouth hungrily.

Love, Lies And Divorce – Episode 6

She smiled as she looked at his picture…the man that had stolen her heart three years ago, that year would make it the fourth since he was gone and she still couldn’t get over him…
Zainab had helped her get better the other day…of all her friends, Zainab was one who could  turn a gloomy situation into a gloomy one.
She would be twenty eight years old in a few weeks time and she hadn’t thought of re-marrying or dating…men kept coming up to her but they would never understand that she was still in love with her Frederick.
Was it that hard for them?
She applied a generous amount of foundation on her face, Edima Bassey was a pharmacist and they had a seminar going on …she had to be there as early as possible…
She had made up her mind not to have anything to do with men for a while…she would keep off them till she was ready to go out of her way and love again…
Till she was ready to give her heart out to another…it was such a risky thing to do…
‘what do we have here…’? she smacked her lips as her phone buzzed…she had sent Lola a message on watsapp but she was yet to reply…what was going on? She desperately hoped her friend was okay…she had to be…
She sighed and dropped the phone back in her purse…it was a reminder from the Pharmacists Association Nigeria about the seminar…
Sometimes  she wished Lola could divorce Femi, that man was no good…he toyed with her feelings, he was obnoxious and proud…all because he was a wealthy man….
But Lola was fixed  on him, she loved her husband more than anything else in the world…sadly, he didn’t feel same about her…
Zainab had talked to her on phone the other day, though she didn’t give them details about what Lola had filled her in on…one look at Zee’s face could tell you, Femi had done something terrible to Lola…
And there was Amaka who had acted like she was menopausal…what was happening to her friends? She lined her lips quickly and  mentally rehearsed  her plans for the day…she would call her friends later…
‘oops…’ she kissed the picture on her table and rushed out…she hoped she wouldn’t be caught in traffic as she had an important part to play at the seminar…
The Seminar  wasn’t a national matter, it was meant for pharmacists who resided in the western part of the country, so there was not much crowd…
She parked her car in the area allotted for cars and slipped out of with her briefcase and her identity card hanging down her neck.
‘Welcome Mrs Bassey…get prepared, you’re up next…’ the President of the Association whispered into her ears and she suddenly felt nervous…she hadn’t expected to give the lecture on ‘drug abuse among professionals’ so quickly
‘You look nervous…..’ the man’s cologne unsettled her brain…her eyes peered at the man that owned that beautiful voice.

‘I…don’t know…maybe…’ she struggled to tear her eyes off of him as his kind gaze travelled over her face…
‘excuse me, that would be my name…’ her voice was shaky as she was called forth to deliver the lecture…she had never felt this nervous….why did his voice tickle her nerves ?
She forced the thoughts of him out of her mind and gave herself a sound advice as she climbed the stage, the crowd was kind enough to applaud her which helped her shaky feet steady…
He was still staring at her, hell, everyone was but why did she feel unnerved by his gaze? …he looked like a man in his thirties, he was darkly handsome and his mouth wore this permanent smile…like he was always in a good mood?
He wasn’t tall, she observed him as she  scanned the hall…he had good hair, his head was a mass of black curls…his brows were well shaved and haughty…
His nose was straight and solid…he was a very cute guy , she decided and forced herself to focus on what she’d come to do….
‘Goodmorning Ladies and gentlemen, ….I am Mrs Edima Bassey and I am here to present a lecture on Drug Use among Medical Professionals….what  is Drug Use? Let us start with the definition of terms….’ She slipped on her glasses and  began to lecture….
‘her husband is dead…why wouldn’t she change her name…’? the woman beside him seemed displeased…her statement further relieved him of the tension that had built within when he had heard her full name….
‘my god? Am I that desperate to hit on a married woman’? That was Omale’s first thought when he had heard her name…
Omale  Ibrahim was a medical doctor, one of his pharmacist friends had invited him for the seminar and he had been willing to attend, he loved seminars and conferences and all forms of gathering that sought to impact knowledge about socio-medical realities….
He was a very open minded person and was ready to listen to what anybody had to offer, provided it was something rich and meaningful…
So she was a widow? Could he handle that? He didn’t know why, but from the moment she’d walked into that hall, he just couldn’t take his eyes off her…
He reminded her of someone he’d really cared about once before….he reminded her of his late wife, Ene.
They  had been  married for just a year, that was the happiest part of his thirty six years life on earth…but why was happiness elusive?

Love, Lies And Divorce – Episode 7

‘Good morning darling, I prepared breakfast….’ Sly felt helpless as Amaka was bent on ignoring him. He’d tried opening the door to her room but she’d locked it from inside. When would this be over? He’d asked himself that question  many times.
‘Not hungry, I’m back on diet….’ She replied uninterestedly as she fanned her eyes over the table. Her husband was trying too hard to impress her but she wouldn’t give in that easily.
‘Baby? But you’re too thin, you need to add some flesh….’ Sly wondered why Amaka was this weight conscious.
She just had that baby and she needed to look healthy but she was already bent on going back to her old ways.
He’d met her at a wedding ceremony, her tall and elegant frame attracted him to her, her neck was long and graceful as that of a swan…her caramel complexion was flawless and her tiny eyeballs were heavily cloaked with thick lashes.
His wife was a very beautiful woman but she was too skinny for his  liking.
‘Oh! I forgot your secretary has a fat ass… Is that what you want me to look like?’ Her tongue burned for more words.
One look at Sly got her more perturbed, there was nothing he could do to placate the resentment that brew in her heart.
He had slept with another woman, he  had made a fool of her. She had done almost everything to please this man and still, he cheated.
What irked her most was the way he carried himself, he still looked calm and peaceful. He didn’t look sorry enough for what he’d done.
‘I am sorry Amy, why can’t you get past this?’ his shoulders dropped in a dejected fashion.
‘Get past the fact that you fucked your mistress and you had the nerves to tell me about it?’ Her voice rose with the anger she felt.
‘It happened only once… Amy believe me… I love you so much.’ Sly bowed his head in regret… Maybe he shouldn’t have listened to the pastor… Maybe he should have kept it to himself… They wouldn’t be having this conversation now.

‘After all the things I did for you in bed? Wearing lingerie, French maid costume? Riding on top of you? Wasn’t that enough? Am I not good enough…?’ Her voice broke and she dragged a seat and settled down.
The hurt in her eyes was evident. It made him feel worse. What had he been thinking, hooking up with Doyin?
‘Amaka…you’re perfect for me…I love you the way you are.’ He rose to meet him but she blocked his hands from touching her.
‘How easy for you to say. You know what? I am not going to cry no more, you’re not that important.’ she swallowed
‘Baby please don’t say that, I am still your husband…’ Was she going to cheat on him as she’d threatened? His heart pounded heavily against his chest.
‘One last question, did you use protection?’ she rubbed her fingers waiting for his response…
‘Baby do we have to go back and forth on this matter? Is that even necessary? I am healthy, I promise you… I checked out with the doctor’ He was desperate to win his angel back.
‘You’re now avoiding my question? Here’s the deal… From now on we are having sex with condoms. Don’t speak to me unnecessarily. Whenever you want to have sex, just tell me and I’ll comply but I take back my love. And we’re not having any other kid except Odinaka… If that’s too much for me to ask, you may as well go back to your mistress.’ she folded her arms across her chest and waited for him to speak.
‘I’ll do anything you want…’ Although her terms sounded ridiculous, he was ready to abide by whatever rules would make her happy. He knew for sure that she only acted this way because she was unhappy with him.
‘Good!’Amaka replied.
‘Benson is flying in today… He would stay with us awhile… You remember him right?’ Sly spoke of his cousin who lived in Hanover, Germany.
‘That’s your problem, not mine.’ Her voice was low.
Without wasting more time with him, she got up and left for her room. Lola hadn’t returned her calls, neither had she replied her messages on Whatsapp.
Sylvester watched as she walked away from him, he needed to talk to someone… He needed advice.

‘Excuse me  pretty…’ Omale had kept his eyes on her and saw as she left the building.
She had heard the male voice quite alright, but she didn’t think the voice called after her. Finally it was over, she could return to her normal and boring life again.
Preparing for the lecture had kept her busy for a few weeks, she’d gone to different libraries and book stores and had spent quality time researching on the topic. Now she was done, she felt empty. What would keep her busy yet again? She usually drowned herself in her work.
Standing on that stage was a bit frightening for her but she scaled through and it scared her as she remembered his smile.
Honestly, she was jittery at first but one look at his face gave her this assurance, hope and faith that she could do anything. His smile had meant so many things to her as she stood on that stage.
Most importantly was the semblance it bore to Frederick’s smile… She forced the door open and felt that sick feeling creep up her spine.
Why did he have to leave her?
‘Hello ….’ Omale wouldn’t give up as he followed her to where she parked her car.
She turned and faced the owner of that masculine voice, the man that owned that smile…Why was he calling after her?

‘Hello….can I help you?’ she asked politely.
‘If you want to….’ He replied casually, still watching her fine features.
‘I’m sorry, I was about leaving for something very important… Do you mind?’ She let her guards up. One look at his dark eyes  told her this man was no good and it bothered her.
‘I am Omale Ibrahim….’ He smiled and offered her his hand.
‘I don’t think I know you… Can I go now?’ She was being defensive.
‘Oh, I see… You did well up there, I really enjoyed your lecture. Why didn’t you go into academics?’ He pressed on as she ignored his hand.
‘Really? Thank you Mr Omale… I really have to run.’ She was getting irritated by his confidence? Who did he think he was?
‘Can I at least know your name? Have your number?’ He kept on his smile… This one was trying too hard to be difficult .
‘Just get out of my way, I am married and I feel insulted by whatever you’re trying to do…’ she blurted out angrily.
‘But I heard you are a….’ He paused as tears welled up her eyes and he knew that instant he’d hit a nerve.
‘Get out of my way before I call the security you fool!’ She slammed the car door and ignited the engine…. Without looking back, she drove away.
‘Wow… I just found my wife.’ Omale adjusted his tie as excitement bubbled inside him…Edima Bassey… He wouldn’t give up on her that easily.
…. To Be Continued.

Zainab had woken early for the Fajr prayers, she needed to praise her maker for being gracious and showing mercy by upholding and blessing he family.
She prayed for her lovely children, Abdul Khadir, Umaima and A’isha, she prayed for God to help them prosper and excel in their academics. She prayed for them to find favor among men and continue to be good children. Then, she prayed for Allah’s illumination to fall on Abdul’s path…the man she had married, the man who cherished and adored her more than anything in the world.

Love, Lies And Divorce – Episode 8

It was new day, a Saturday and Saturdays were always lovely. She loved the day specially because it made her unusually excited and happy.
It was probably because on Saturdays, Abdul usually stayed home and spent time with her and the children but he was still asleep…
He’d even missed his prayers and she didn’t want to wake him. He’d been stressed up enough, moreso, he was to have an appointment with one of his clients. He’d told her that.
‘Can you guys tone it down?’ She yelled at her kids who played ball in the yard, they hadn’t wasted any time.
After a healthy breakfast of scones and cereal they rushed to the yard with their ball. They made her so happy as she peered at them from the kitchen window.
‘Watch your Baby sister, Umaima.’ Zainab instructed her eldest daughter. Aisha still needed to be watched closely while the other two were already grown.
She poured a generous amount of brown rich tea into her mug and inhaled the enticing fragrance, she was partial to tea while Abdul preferred coffee.
She gulped the drink without hesitation an it burnt the tip of her tongue, she carefully placed the teapot on the cabinet and reached for her buzzing phone.
The time was almost ten o’clock, she felt glad that Lola had agreed to come spend the night at her place, she could stay as long as she wanted.
A break from that Femi guy was all she needed, she would figure out the rest later.
‘Hello pretty one….’ It was Edima calling.
‘Don’t call me that.’ Edima waved her off. That was what he’d called her… That was what the stranger called her.
‘Is somebody having a bad day? Do you want to talk to mummy about it?’ Zee raiased the glass to her lips.
‘Something like that. Listen, we have a lot to discuss. Something terrible happened to me today, I need to talk to you and the girls.’ She couldn’t wait to see her friends
‘So do we meet today? Can Amaka meet up? This is sudden you know?’ Zainab  knew  whatever Edima had to discuss was important.
‘I shall send her a message. Have you heard from Lola? I tried calling her but she wasn’t picking. Maybe I should stop over at her place…Don’t you think?’ Edima was concerned about her friend.
‘Don’t do that, she’s sleeping soundly in my house. Just come over, I’ll be waiting.’ She smiled and ended the call.
‘Phew!’ She sighed. Shopping was cancelled. Whenever the girls met, they usually spent more than an hour… It was going to be another long day.
‘I guess Abdul would do the shopping’ she gulped the remainder of the tea and closed her eyes. He would help her no doubt, that man loved her beyond what she imagined.

‘Zee….’ Lola  called out the name in fear.
‘My god! you scared me.’ Zainab turned and saw her friend stand by the kitchen door.
‘Good morning….’ Lola whispered frightfully
Her actions with Abdul the other night dulled her senses. She hadn’t slept through the night. What had she done? What had she brought upon herself?
Here she was standing before the woman who had her best interests at heart, a woman that was more like a mother she never had; her comfort, her shield from marital rainy days and she had betrayed her.
‘I trust you slept well?’ Zainab took in her friends puffy eyes, had she been crying?
‘I am fine Zee…’ Her voice was uncertain, still shaky.
Guilt and grief embraced her at once. Who could she blame? It wall all Femi’s fault; maybe if he hadn’t brought in that woman, maybe if things were done differently she would never have had to sleep over at Zainab’s house and have sex with Abdul.
The memory of the night before was like a blade stuck to her heart. Anytime she tried to shake it off, pretend nothing had happened, call it a mistake, the blade changed its course and hurt her deeply.
She wondered if she could ever be the same again. Could she bring herself to tell Zainab what she had done?
‘Okay, come and have some Tea. Nothing like morning tea to make one feel much better after a hard day.’ Zainab poured the tea and decided to give her friend time. She would come around; eventually, she would talk about it. It was good to be patient.
‘I would be going back to the house after breakfast. I cannot thank you enough for your help.’ her voice was damp with sadness. Her eyes had lost their fire and she knew she had lost herself.
‘What? How can you go back to that house? Why don’t you give it time. When you feel right about it or you wait for Femi to come back to his senses. Maybe then you could follow him…are you even listening to yourself? You are not happy Lola, you are not yourself. Talk to me girl, I’m here for you…’ Zee pulled a stool and sat beside her friend.
She had this strange feeling that Lola wasn’t totally honest, like she was hiding something.
‘No, I don’t want to talk about it… It hurts me too much.’ She couldn’t look her friend in the eye after what she had done.
She had to leave as fast as she could, she’d deliberately stayed back in bed to avoid Abdul but now she hadn’t seen him. This was her chance, she was going to take it.
‘Is that what you really want? Fine but remember you don’t get healed when the pain is bottled up inside. I hate seeing you like this, that guy was never good for you. Promise me you’ll take care of you….’ Zee’s eyes were sympathetic.
‘I promise Zee, I will.’ she stuttered as the familiar masculine scent travelled closer to the kitchen.
‘Do you mind staying over for a date? Edima called and she said it’s important. Why haven’t you returned their calls?’
‘Oh? I cannot stay Zee. I just want some time alone, that would be best for me. I will call them when I get home.’ She forced herself to look up.

‘He must be awake…’ Zainab  began clearing the table. Her husband was making a call.
‘Yes, I really have to go now. Take care of the kids too.’ She rose abruptly like she’d been cornered by her enemies.
‘Wait, slow down. Why the rush?’ Zainab turned off the tap and observed her friend. Lola  was acting very weird.
‘Goodmorning darling….’ The owner of the baritone strode into the kitchen lazily.
‘Baby, you look awesome.’ Zainab said smiling proudly at her husband.
He bent and took her lips in one swift kiss. ‘Thanks Zee. Lola how was your night?’ His gaze travelled over her mockingly.
‘uhmmm….fine thank you.’ Why did he look this calm after what they’d done?
‘I really have to go now Zainab, I promise to call you when I get home.’ She couldn’t look into his eyes.
Suddenly filled with shame over the way she’d writhed under him, the way she’d swallowed his kissed hungrily…
‘Where to? Don’t you enjoy staying with us?’ Abdul looked from his wife to her.
‘Darling, I told her the same thing but you know Lola can be very stubborn so let her be.’ Zainab smiled ruefully.
‘I’ll be going off to see Alhaji Tako, I’ll be back in the next one hour.’ He turned to Zee briefly.
‘What? Won’t you have breakfast? You still have time, I hate it when you go out hungry.’ She whined but it sounded sweet to his ears.
‘No dear, this contract is a big one, breakfast can wait. I’ll  eat lunch.’ He pulled her closer to him like she was the only valuable thing he possessed.
Lola avoided looking at them, his actions made her feel more guilty.
‘Goodluck baby, God be with you.’ She patted his cheeks as he released her.
‘I can drop you Lola, I think we’re going the same way,’ he looked directly into her eyes.
‘That’s a good idea baby. You should go with him, Lola. See you two later.’ Zainab waved them off before Lola could have another chance to complain.

Love, Lies And Divorce – Episode 9

She couldn’t have said no to Abdul’s offer, it would’ve been suspicious. She avoided his eyes carefully as he drove out of the mansion.
‘Good morning  Farida, yaya dai?’ he was receiving a call.
‘Sweetheart good morning, you forgot to send me the pictures I asked you for.’ Farida’s voice drawled sweetly over the phone.
‘The pictures? Ah! I forgot my dear, can you call me back later? Now is not a good time.’ His young girlfriend could be clingy at times.
She had always sent pictures of her boobs and other parts of her body to him, now she was asking for his, which sounded very ridiculous.
‘Okay my love, do not forget. I cannot wait to feel your honey rod inside of me…’ her voice became low and seductive.
‘Okay honey, bye…’ he chuckled softly and ended the call.
He suddenly turned his face and caught her staring at him, he hadn’t want to go back on the other night but looking into those golden orbs sent fire reeling down his spine.
She quickly looked away as the intensity of his gaze unsettled her once more, it felt pleasing to look into his dark eyes. It felt like sin too.
‘Why are you stopping?’ she was forced to speak to him as he brought the car to a halt.
‘You know Lola, I’ve always liked you. You’re the prettiest of your friends and you have this thing about you. So don’t ever feel last night was a mistake when in truth you know we’ve always been attracted to each other,’ he felt like reaching out to her and taking all her pain away.
‘Last night was a mistake, it was all my fault and I am sorry for luring you into something like that. We should tell Zainab about this, I know it will cost me our friendship but she can always forgive you and your lives would be better off without me.’ how could he say something like that?
‘You’re such an angel, makes me like you even more Lola….’ His voice sounded dangerous.

‘Last night wasn’t a mistake to me and we aren’t telling Zee nothing, you and I enjoyed ourselves thoroughly last night and I feel like we have more to explore. More ground to cover in getting to know each other.’ he paused as discomfort flashed on her face.
‘How could you say something like that? Zainab is my friend and you know that; we are both married.’ her voice broke as she suddenly remembered the divorce issue with Femi.
‘Does it matter? Do you call your unhealthy cohabitation with Femi marriage?’ He scoffed.
‘How dare you speak to me in that manner’? her nostrils flared as she turned to face him.
‘Wow finally some temper, I’ll have my answer after this,’ without hesitation he unfastened his seat belt and pulled her closer to him.
‘Let go of me, you brute! What do you think you’re doing’? she tried to struggle free.
‘Something we would do again,’ he replied steadily and brushed her lips with his kisses then plunged his tongue into her mouth.
She tried to fight him off, this was not right, her mind told her that but the pleasure she found in his lips  could be compared to none, even Femi didn’t make her feel this way.
His hands glided down her chest and caressed her boobs gently; she was pure delight and he would have her over and over again, till he was tired.
She shifted closer to him and pulled at his clothes….her moans were soft and sounded desperate, she wanted more.
‘I guess  we now know what we want….’he pulled away from her leaving her breathless and dazed…was she ready to do this?
‘This is wrong Abdul and you know it….’ Her voice was pleading, why couldn’t she resist his charms?
‘Maybe the wrong things are better for us some times. Let’s be together Lola, I can take care of you and make you forget that bastard, you’re such a beautiful woman and you deserve to be happy…’ he rubbed her shoulders sweetly.
‘What about your wife? What about our friendship…’ he looked determined and serious and she wasn’t about to argue with him.
‘What Zainab doesn’t know wouldn’t hurt Zainab. We’re adults, we would be discreet and you need to stay closer to her…like the way you’ve always been.’ he was quite sure of this arrangement.
‘I don’t know Abdul, just take me home.’ She gave up and turned her eyes to the road.
‘It doesn’t matter what decision you take Lola…we belong to each other…’ his confidence had returned, women were easily  manipulated. His lips curled at the realization that this one was no different, he couldn’t wait for their adventures to begin.

‘So where is she? I thought you told me you have a wife?’ The young lady asked curiously.
‘Yes I used to be married but now I am free.’ Femi kissed her curls gently and slid out of the bed in one swift motion.
He hadn’t seen Lola for some hours now and he wondered where she’d been. He had wanted calling Zainab or her two other friends but knowing them pretty well, they would bombard him with unreasonable questions.
‘You know the first time I saw you, I kept thinking of how nice you’ll be in bed. Those biceps and abs, I kept fantasizing…’ His girlfriend pouted as she watched his hard behind.
‘Really? And did I make your dreams come alive’? Femi replied and focused on the mirror.
This used to be their room. He expected to feel some kind of relief, some kind of peace after ending his marriage with Lola but he felt miserable, he felt like the devil but he wouldn’t go back on his plans, their marriage had been a sham.
Femi was a thirty-six year old man, from a very wealthy family and had made a name in the aviation industry as an engineer.
He was average in height, lean and shapely and very handsome, little wonder females rattled over him, he was purely an Adonis.
‘Oh no sweetheart, you didn’t disappoint. You blew me out of my mind, maybe we should go again? Don’t you think?’ she swaggered towards him as the sheets trailed off showing her naked frame.
‘Are you sure you can handle me, I could get rough….’ His voice became dark as lust pumped his veins.
He’d met Naturi during one of his flights to Germany. They just clicked like they’d known each other forever and he knew instantly, that he would sleep with her.
‘I like it rough honey…’ she drawled the words which ignited him further.
Without waiting for more words to fly out of her mouth her closed her mouth with his and his hands roughly searched her bosom
Together, they clung to each other in breathless passion and fell on the bed groaning, moaning, hungry for pleasure.

Abdul had dropped her and zoomed off for his appointment, she was glued to the spot where she stood.

Love, Lies And Divorce – Episode 10

This used to be her home before the fights began, before her husband’s relatives began visiting and emphasizing her inability to give Femi a child.
This used to be her sacred abode, before Femi desecrated it by bringing his mistresses home. But she couldn’t judge him no more, she was no longer a saint herself.
She swallowed the regret that rose in her belly; she had just kissed Abdul not long ago without feeling guilty about it. She liked it, she liked him… How callous had she become?
Zainab was everything she never had – her friend, her mother, her confidante and she had betrayed her.
What if Abdul was right? What if they both shared an attraction that needed to be explored?
She sighed and prayed to God for answers as pain filled her heart, if only things had turned out differently, maybe she would never had slept with Abdul.
Her heart sank as she glanced round the home. Once upon a time, it radiated peace, love, joy and comfort but presently, it was filled with gloom and depression for her.
Suddenly she felt weak at the realization that she would be a divorcee or she was a divorcee. Without a care in the world, she dropped her bag on the table and sat on the floor.
She was deeply hurt and no one could take this pain away, nobody could understand what she felt. Femi no longer loved her, it was clear from his actions, he seized every opportunity to hurt her, to make her feel unworthy and valueless to him. He rejected her love outrightly. It was over for her, over for them both.
Her tears was her final acceptance.
Naturi  walked in and almost tripped on the small sized wooden stool that graced the parlor… Who was the lady? And why was she crying?
‘Baby, where are you? I hope you haven’t gotten lost, I have a big house…’ Femi’s voice reverberated from inside.
Lola was still oblivious to what went on around her, she was stuck in her own world, a world filled with pain and depression.
‘I think we have a problem here….’ Naturi eyed Femi suspiciously. Hadn’t he gotten rid of his wife as he’d told her earlier?
‘Yes, do you mind waiting inside for me?’ he clicked his tongue as he watched his wife who was completely unaware of his presence.

This made him feel more guilty, seeing her look so desolate and pale made him feel worse. He knew Lola didn’t deserve any of this but he couldn’t help it, he needed to end their marriage.
‘Lola….’ He called softly.
‘Femi…’ She jerked a bit, surprised to see him.
‘I don’t know if my apologies could do anything to placate this pain you feel inside. I am really sorry Lola but you know we were both unhappy, with time you’ll see the truth.’ he dropped down beside her.
She wiped her face with the back of her palms, too tired to cry. What was the point? Her tears wouldn’t make Femi change his mind.
‘Who is she? Is that your new wife…?’ she sniffled as her eyes met with the young woman in a white towel who stood far away from them.
‘No….’ Femi snapped and stared daggers at Naturi, what on earth was she still doing there? He’d told her to wait in the room, she was just going to complicate things for him.
‘You are really heartless Femi! I have been blinded by love these years. You hurt me real bad and it pleases you to hurt me more,’ tears welled up in her eyes.
He had brought another woman hours after he’d told her about the divorce? He was such a devil…and it broke her heart that he wasn’t sorry.
Abdul was right, their marriage had been an unhealthy co-habitation.
‘Lola, I am really sorry, it’s just…’ he tried to explain but the lift of her finger forced him to shut up.
‘I need the divorce papers today. Let’s get it over with. You’re free to do anything you want, I don’t care anymore.’ She wiped her face and rose to her feet.
‘Lola….’ He called her back, wondering why she sounded so determined. He was supposed to be happy, he was supposed to celebrate the fact that she had finally accepted his idea of them getting divorce but he felt numb.
‘Get me those papers before nightfall or I’ll get them myself; and you know what that means, you could lose a lot of money.’ She was suddenly filled with confidence.
She had lost herself while trying to please an unlovable man as Femi. She had dined with Lucifer all these year but right there as she stared at him, all her desires for him fled. He wasn’t worth it. She was writing a new chapter In her adult life and a new man would grace those pages.
‘Get out of my way b*tch!’ she pushed Naturi aside and stormed into the room.

‘Who do I have here!’ Zainab hugged  Amaka as she walked in carrying her baby in her arms. Edima had arrived earlier and had treated herself to a cup of cold Zobo drink.
‘Welcome baby mama, you look hot in that dress.’ Edima complimented her friend.
‘Hey don’t call me that, at least I am still married to his father.’ Amaka winked and hugged Edima lovingly.
‘Where’s Lola…?’ she finally asked as she settled into a seat beside Edima.
‘Still the same question I asked Zee’ Edima gulped more of the drink.
‘Girls, a lot has been going on with Lola. Sometimes I get confused… She has refused to let me in but I know for sure, she is in a very bad place. We need to pray for her….’ Zainab offered weakly. Lola had changed. Usually when Femi hurt her, she would spill her guts to them all but this time was different, like she was hiding something.

Love, Lies And Divorce – Episode 11

‘She hasn’t returned my calls either. Maybe we should go over her place after this.’ Edima checked through her phone.
‘I think she deserves privacy. God knows what that fool of a husband has done this time. Maybe we should send thugs after him.’ Amaka was quite pissed.
‘Hey, slow down,’ Zee rubbed her hand.
‘You know Zee, sometimes I envy you. Your relationship with Abdul is quite amazing. You are both perfect for each other. I wish I could have that…’ She shook her head slightly.
‘Honey, but Sly is perfect for you. That guy is the best cook ever!’ Edima wondered why her friend sounded so hopeless.
‘I wish he was….’ Amaka exchanged glares with Zainab, Edima didn’t know of Sly’s latest escapade.
‘What? Why are you two looking at each other? Is my make-up funny?’ Edima wondered.
‘No, sorry we couldn’t tell you the other day… Sylvester cheated on Amaka with his secretary.’ Zainab explained quietly.
‘True that!’ Amaka pecked her baby softly as Edima’s eyes widened with surprise.
‘No, oh God Amy! I am so sorry. How could he do this to you?’ She pulled off her glasses and focused on her friend.
‘No don’t do that, don’t pity me. I am doing fine by myself, I’ll pull through this but I’ll make his life a living hell.’ Amy pulled her guards up.
‘Are you sure about that? ‘ Edima asked.
‘Yes, guess what I told him? We would only have sex with condoms and we won’t speak to each other except it’s really necessary.’ Amaka  told her friends about her plan.
‘Wow! That’s a bit….’ Zainab tried to find the right words for her friend’s ridiculous idea.
‘INTENSE’ Edima supplied, what was Amaka thinking?
‘Wait, he was the one who cheated on me? Hello? Remember? I need your support on this.’ How could her friends betray her?
‘Honey, I am going to be honest with you… You’re lucky Sly even confessed to cheating, most men don’t do it. Instead when they feel guilty, they buy you gifts or start acting nice. I think you deserve to be mad, to cry and feel hurt but you have to do everything in moderation.’ Zainab spoke coolly but lay emphasis on each word.

‘Zee is right Amaka, giving him the cold shoulder when he wants to make love to you or ignoring him wouldn’t help you, you’ll only hurt yourself. I think you should try and forgive Sly. That guy is a good one, I think his secretary seduced him. He is hardly the type to commit adultery. Why don’t you speak to him? Or see a therapist? If you ignore him for too long, he may find his way back into the arms of another woman. Most men cheat Amy, this one confessed so give him a chance.’ Edima advised.
‘I can’t believe you guys are my friends! What makes you think Sly isn’t lying? Was I at the office with him? What if his affair with Doyin has been going on for a long time and maybe she is trying to blackmail him and he came running to me. I don’t get why you should support me.’ She was frustrated…
‘Amy, you don’t get this do you? The day you signed up for marriage, the day you took those vows before the priest and the congregation, you had accepted anything Sly would bring to the table. You really need to forgive him. Whatever you do, remember your son.’ Zainab insisted, inwardly praising God for her husband who had no reason to cheat on her during their years of marriage.
‘You think it’s that easy?’ she snorted at her two friends.
‘Eventually you have to forgive him, he is your husband.’ Edima cut in
‘Be careful Amy, don’t let your revengeful heart destroy what you and Sly had together, it was really beautiful. Maybe you should go on a vacation, that could help you know?’ Zainab suggested.
‘You make all this sound easy. Has Abdul cheated on you before? I don’t think either of you understands what I am going through. I wish Lola were here, she would be by my side…’ Amy was still bent on going ahead with her plans.
‘No, why would he cheat on me? I give him everything he wants. I am thinking of wearing those lingeries he bought me…’ Zainab winked, she was so proud of her man.
‘You sound really naughty, I know you’re just saying that.’ Edima burst out laughing.
‘That is coming from a woman who wears hijab in front of her female friends.’ Amy couldn’t hold back the laughter.
‘Am I that  outdated?’ Zee smiled, happy that the mood had lightened. If only Lola were here.
‘Not outdated, ancient is the word!’ Edima almost choked on her drink.
‘So what did you have to tell us?’ Amaka quickly checked her phone which buzzed loudly.

‘Uhmmm, I met this guy…’ she started, a bit unsure.
‘I’mma drink to that!’ Amaka yelled and gestured for a glass.
‘Let’s hear her out honey.’ Zee relaxed on her chair.
‘Okay, I had this lecture to deliver at a seminar, then this guy kept smiling at me during the lecture. He reminded me of Fred. Then as I was about leaving, he came along and asked for my number,’ she fiddled with her fingers.
‘And?’ they both chorused.
‘And… I think I did something very stupid’ Edima  had never felt this way about any man for a very long time.
‘Please don’t tell me you yelled at him. Is he cute?’ Amaka was every bit the curious cat.
‘I told him to back off that I am married.’ She stuttered.
‘Oh my God! Are you serious? You told this guy you were married?’ Zainab shook her head in disbelief.
‘What were you thinking Edima? From the way you sound, it’s like you like him already.’ Amaka was a bit disappointed.
‘Yes, I made a grave mistake, now I’ll never see him again…’ she closed her eyes for a moment.
‘Hey, look at me, if you two are meant to be, he will find you. Our hearts never lie. Do you know anything about him? What does he do? Maybe we could find him on internet…’ Zainab asked.
‘No, but I think he told me his name is Omale, that’s all I remember.’ Edima was frightened by the possibility of never seeing him again.
‘Uhmm…ladies, I think I have to go. Sly just texted me about the arrival of his cousin Ben.’ Amaka sighed.
‘So what do I do? Tell me?’ Edima tapped her fingers nervously on the table.
‘Pray. Tomorrow is Sunday, Pray. I’ll include you in my prayers dear…’ Zainab smiled warmly at Edima.
‘You’re always so religious. Well Edima, as I said earlier, if your hearts are for each other, you shall meet again.’ Amaka kissed her cheek and waved them goodbye.
‘Alright, I guess I should go too. I’ll check on Lola later.’ Edima hugged Zee and hurried out.
‘Sweet friends…’ Zainab smiled happily. It was one thing to  have friends, it was another to sustain that friendship over the years.
‘Is that you Aisha? Umaima I thought I told you to watch after your sister’ Zainab wondered which of her kids was knocking on the door which was obviously opened.
‘Peace be unto this house…’ a female voice spoke.

‘Good afternoon, can I help you?’ Zainab turned to see a very elegant young woman.
She was short and light skinned, she didn’t wear a hijab but tied a turban on her head and a scarf over her shoulders.
She wore dangling earrings that fell to her shoulders and her fingers and forearms were decorated with black henna. She was a very beautiful girl.
Her lips were painted red and very attractive to look out, her nose was erect and proud and her eyes possessed a confidence Zainab couldn’t understand and she saw her younger self in this  girl that stood before her.
‘I am looking for  Mallam  Amjad Abdul,’ she moistened her lips while her eyes scanned the whole parlor expectantly.
‘Oh, my husband, who are you please?’ Zainab was surprised at herself for sounding so possessive.
‘I am his secretary. A client came complaining about our service so I thought I should let him know. My name is Farida’ she explained.
‘Oh, I see. He never told me he had a secretary. Abdul isn’t around.’ She felt uneasy looking at this girl.
‘Okay Madam, have a nice day. May Allah’s countenance shine upon you and your household.’ Farida bowed and walked out briskly.
‘Amin’ Zainab replied and rushed to the window to stare after the girl.
For the first time since her marriage to Abdul, she was terrified.

Love, Lies And Divorce – Episode 12

‘So how is Germany?’ That was the first time he’d spoken to his cousin since he picked him from the airport.
Ben had been on call talking to some lady. Yes, from the way he’d sounded, Sly knew his cousin was talking to a woman.
‘Been fine bro and how has married life been with you?’ Ben paused and looked around the house as he dropped his luggage.
‘Why should you ask me that?’ Sly returned, a bit fierce. He’d not gotten over the fact that Ben had missed his wedding.
‘Man, I am sorry, Okay? I promise to make it up to you. I was very busy at the time of the wedding. I am sorry I didn’t get to meet your wife but I’ll still meet her right?’ Ben was apologetic.
‘Sure, let me fetch you a drink.’ Sly packed his luggage and headed to the cellar first.
‘So long a time…’ Ben whispered to himself and walked closer to where the pictures hung gracefully adding to the lovely theme of the parlor.
The painting of a nude woman holding a child to her breasts attracted him. He loved paintings a lot, it reminded him of Bruce Onabrakpeya’s work ‘Negritude’
Then his eyes strayed so her smiling face; her eyes were golden and they danced with laughter. They were clouded by a canopy of long, thick and dark lashes. He wondered if they were natural? She sat on a rocky terrain and threw one slender but shapely leg to the air. She was a sight to behold. Her long neck was graceful, it reminded him of the Ostriches he’d seen on his way back to Nigeria.
Who was she? He brushed the picture slightly, she was perfect and highly photogenic as her caramel complexion twinkled.
‘That’s Amaka….’ Sly smiled proudly as he returned with a bottle of white wine.
‘Amaka?’ Ben raised his brows.
‘My wife, mother of my son Odinaka.’ He supplied.
‘Oh! She’s absolutely stunning’. Ben was unsettled by the beauty of the woman in the photograph and he wondered if she were this beautiful in person…the picture woudn’t flee his memory but he made strong effort not to fix his eyes on it. He hated staring at people’s wives talk more his cousin’s.
‘So tell me about your love life, when are you getting married Ben?’ Sly poured the drinks.

‘I don’t have a girlfriend presently but I do have a very interesting sex life. Do you wanna hear it?’ he winked at Sly who wrinkled his nose in disgust.
‘Please don’t tell me you’re gay.’ Sly paused and stared at his cousin who was clearly amused at his line of thought.
‘Don’t make me laugh man, do I look gay to you?’ Sly chuckled softly.
‘I don’t know, you know white culture has a way of influencing Africans who reside there so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.’ he swallowed his drink hurriedly.
‘I can never be gay. I don’t have a girlfriend Sly. I am too busy to keep one. Who knows? I may find myself a wife before I return to Germany.’ he gulped his drink.
‘That my friend, would be your greatest accomplishment.’ Sly raised a glass in toast.
‘I have money, I am satisfied… That is my greatest accomplishment.’ Ben rebutted his cousin’s statement.
‘No, you need a woman by your side. A tall, beautiful, shapely, hardworking, intelligent, very good in bed.’ Sly paused as Amaka walked in with their child.
‘I guess you were describing your wife…’ Ben’s eyes brightened as Amaka walked towards them and instantly, he knew he would never be the same.
She wore  a mini skirt that showed off her sexy legs and the tank top she wore revealed her tommy slightly…how could a mother of one be this hot?
He quickly poured himself more drink to adjust to the situation as she drew closer to where he sat.
‘Welcome….’ Amaka forced a smile. She had to pretend before this stranger. Definitely, that was Sly’s cousin, Benson, or whatever his name was.
She scanned him briefly and noticed the slight resemblance he shared with Sly but he was lightskinned with a mass of black hair and low cut beards.
His eyes were soft and dreamy, Sylvester’s cousin looked very much a Casanova, the likes of Ramsey Noah and Majid Michel.
‘Hey darling, come over here.’ Sly was a bit excited by her expression. Had Amaka forgiven him? He would find out later.

‘This is Benson, my cousin I told you about. He would be staying with us for a while.’ Sly took her waist with his free hand.
‘Hello Benson, I am Amaka, pleased to meet you.’ she offered a hand which he took too quickly.
Their hands bonded for some moments, her heart fluttered at the softness of his touch and she imagined being with a masseuse. She quickly withdrew her hand as a strange sensation crept up her neck. Why was she acting like a school girl?
‘Call me Ben.’ He focused on her eyes, she was more beautiful in person. Amaka was a goddess.
‘I have to go check the baby’ she cleared her throat and excused herself.
‘No problem.’ Sly kissed his baby and dropped his glass.
‘I am sorry to say this but I already made reservations at a hotel’ Benson lied. He couldn’t stay in that house.
‘Are you kidding me? Sometimes I wonder if I have offended you in any way’ Sly picked the glass again.
‘No, don’t say that. Remember I told you I have a very interesting sex life?’ Benson swallowed nervously, he had to leave that place, he couldn’t face her again. She was like an inferno and infernos consumed their victim.
‘What is your sex life about really?’ Sly lifted a brow in curiosity.
‘I  do threesomes…’ that was another lie.
‘What? That’s crazy.’ Sly shrugged, he wasn’t surprised, his cousin had always had a rough edge since their youthful days.
‘Not surprised? So you see my cousin, I really have to go but I’ll come here frequently. I need to bond with little Odinaka you know?’ he winked.
‘Why don’t you stay the night and leave tomorrow? I don’t remember chasing you…’ Sly suggested.
‘My intention isn’t to make you feel bad so Okay, I shall stay the weekend… Is that cool?’ He threw his hands up in the air.
‘Better, cousin… Now let me show you some pictures.’ Sly was quite excited his cousin had decided to spend the weekend.
‘No problem, go ahead…’ Ben swallowed the drink and prayed he would withstand seeing her pictures.

The  cathedral was a glorious monument….she paused not knowing what to do next….he wasn’t sure about this…there was still time to turn back….
‘Lord help me….’ She finally made up her mind and walked into the massive building which swallowed her petite form immediately …
‘The lord is in his holy place, let the whole earth keep silent…’ the pastor was opening the service with a short prayer…
Thankfully, people’s eyes were closed so she  had ample time to rush in without their glances at her…since the demise of her husband…she couldn’t remember the last time she came to church…
She had just come to pray to God and planned to sneak out before the close of service to avoid pitiful glances and questions from nosy church members…maybe they cared for her, maybe they weren’t nosy…but Edima hated being the object of attention….
‘this way madam…’ an usher led her to an empty seat and she smiled graciously at the young man…things had really changed in the church she observed…
‘Amen…’ she joined the others in chorus as the Pastor began making declarations…
‘thank you …’ a familiar voice spoke…and she knew someone had been offered a seat next to hers…
She couldn’t help it…she quickly forced her eyes open and found him staring at her in shock…what was going on here?
‘we meet again…’ Omale whispered trying not to distract others….
‘uhmmm…’ Edima tried to say something but her mouth felt dry…was he stalking her or something? This was too much of a coincidence….
‘darling have you seen my purse’? a young woman took a seat next to him and her heart sank…was he married? She wondered, but there was no ring…
‘no June…we’ll search for it later…’ he replied carelessly and turned to face the woman that haunted his dreams…
‘why don’t we seat over there…’ ? the young woman suggested and eyed Edima briefly…
‘no, we’ll seat here…but you can move there  if you want…’ he suggested…
June was his late wife’s best friend…after Ene’s death they’d become quite close and with her help he was able to pull through the depression that tormented him after the burial of his lovely wife…
June had always been there for him, she understood him more than any other person could…sometimes she spent time at his place…though nothing ever transpired between them…he was careful about it…besides she was in a relationship of her own…

‘Stubborn guy…’ June mused uneasily…wondering who the other lady was as she kept exchanging glares with Omale…her stomach fluttered as she caught Omale staring at the other woman.

‘We meet yet again, my pretty….’Omale whispered close to her, he couldn’t believe his luck, all weekend he’d thought about the feisty Edima Bassey that had blown his mind away….and here she was sitting right beside him…
It made him believe all the more that they were meant for each other…
‘do you mind’? Edima averted her gaze from his beautiful eyes and faced the pastor…
‘I hope you know you and I are meant together….’ Omale pressed on….
‘Omale….are you okay’? June was concerned about her best friend…was he exchanging words with the other woman?
‘alright June, let’s concentrate…we have a lot to talk about after service…’ he smiled briefly and faced the pulpit…
She wasn’t herself as she kept stealing glances at him, was this real? Her heart raced beneath her chest, things were happening to fast…it felt like she was stuck in a dream and unable to return to reality…
But there he was, it was no dream, he was every bit adorable in his navy blue tuxedo….very pleasing to the eyes indeed…
She suddenly felt nervous as she scanned the woman that sat beside him…it didn’t look like they were lovers…but what if they were? What if he was already taken?
She suddenly felt stupid for acting all up previously…how could she blow this chance God had given her? This was a second chance, she would take it and explore it….
Seeing him right there and then, gave her  the conviction that somehow they would end up together….
The Preacher spoke about  ‘faith’, Faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen…
He implored the congregation to hold fast their faith both in pleasing times and trying times…because without faith no man could please God…
‘Oh Happy Day….’ The choir chanted the hymn joyously with brought the service to an end….that wasn’t her plan…
She hadn’t planned to stay till closing of the church…she didn’t want the church members to come flooding around her…she hated pity…that could even get her emotional and she didn’t want to see him this way…
‘Shake five members before you go, God bless you all…’ the preacher smiled and the grace was said…
‘Are you going to refuse me now’?  Omale smiled and offered his hand.

Love, Lies And Divorce – Episode 14

‘I thought she  was married? Where is your husband? Meanwhile I love your gown, it suits you perfectly.’ June observed the gloom that spread on Omale’s face, had she said something bad?
‘Uhmmm… Not really.’ Edima forced the pain that clogged her throat. Had he really believed she was married?
‘it’s okay, you don’t have to answer that. June here is my bestfriend and she could be very blunt at times.’ Omale looked from June to Edima.
‘Sister Edima, I can’t believe this… How have you been?’ Mrs  Shola walked briskly towards them…she was the pastors’s wife and head of the women fellowship.
‘Good day Madam,’ Edima rose to acknowledge her.
‘Mummy good afternoon…’ June flashed the woman her sweetest smile.
‘Ah, my daughter June, Brother Omale, it seems you three know each other.’ The woman was super excited that Edima had returned to church.
‘Yes it seems so…’ Omale replied cheerfully. So Edima had worshipped here before? Well, he had recently started worshipping with the ‘Grace Arena’ church for a year now, it was June that cajoled him to leave his church for hers and he liked it there.
‘Edima I’ll see you later, before you leave. Have fun.’ She waved the trio goodbye.
‘Wow! So you’ve worshipped here before? How come I know nothing about you?’ June was curious.
‘I haven’t been to church for three years now,’ Edima replied wondering why June was so nosy…
‘You look beautiful,’ Omale complimented her…
‘You too,’ she smiled shyly.
‘I really have to go now as June had rightly said, my elder sister is having a party and we cannot be late so here’s my card or better still let’s exchange contacts, I’ll call you.’ He handed her his complimentary card.
‘It’s okay’ she dialed her number into his cell phone.
‘Hurry will you?’ June stamped her feet like an over-pampered child.
‘Patience is a virtue,’Omale winked at her.
‘Here it is’ She handed him the phone.
‘Edima, what’s the meaning of your name? I know you’re from Akwa-Ibom or Cross River, we share some boundaries’ he aked.
‘Edima means ‘my love or my beloved’ whichever one. Where are you from?’ she returned his question.
‘Benue. I think I would store your name as  ‘my love’ he stared intently into her eyes to see her reaction.
‘Oh, that sounds nice,’ she fiddled with her scarf.
‘Okay my love, let me go for that party. I would call you and text you everyday, is that okay?’ He asked as he joined the impatient June.
‘Yes, ofcourse.’ her insides tingled with excitement and hope.
‘Bye dear….’ He waved at her and walked off with June who didn’t spare her a glance.
‘Bye…’ she whispered softly and pressed her palm to her beating chest. Why did he have to be so sweet? And what was June to him? She’d observed the way he related with her, they were platonic friends but she still wasn’t comfortable.
She glanced briefly at the card and smiled…this one was a Doctor eh? He was an Optic surgeon who owned  a hospital.
She concluded right there, that Omale Ibrahim was one of the most humble men she’d come across, she couldn’t wait to see the girls and tell them about this.

The yellow Sunday sun had receded  to a dull orange colour and it became evening for many. Some decided to stay home with their family while some decided to hang out with their friends. Sundays were always special.
‘I hope she’s okay…’ Amaka checked her phone for the ninth time, still no message or call from Lola. She needed to get in touch with her friend.
The house was abnormally quiet, yes, things had changed now since the day he confessed having a torrid affair with his secretary, nothing was ever going to be the same.
Thankfully, his cousin Benson had gone out. His presence had made her feel self conscious in a weird way. She’d only felt that way in their early days of marriage.
Benson was trouble and she decided to keep her distance, he was an angel and sometimes during meals she found his eyes straying to her breasts. Was she being paranoid? But she began to relish it.
She’d forced herself to come watch t.v because she was struggling to focus on other things save for Ben. She didn’t know what had gotten into her but she assured herself it was nothing harmful, how could she think of another man who wasn’t her husband? And there she was punishing Sly for his sins.
Gladly, Benson would be vacating to the hotel he booked, that would save from tension and keep her relaxed for her next photoshoot for  MODA MAGAZINE, a magazine for young wives and mothers. One of her hairdressers had given her information about the photoshoot and being well placed in the fashion industry, she meandered her way to being the only selected mother for the shoot.
Sundays had always been fun before Sly ruined everything with his cheating ways, usually they  bathed the baby and put him to sleep, then they would spend the whole evening playing their favorite game, Scrabble and making love to each other…
She turned off the television angrily. Why did he have to cheat? Those feelings of inadequacy filled her once again and she hated him the more. How could he hurt her this way?
‘Baby….’ Sly walked into the living room determined to win his wife back….
She spared him a glance and riveted her eyes back to the phone in her hands…
What did he want now?
‘Amy please talk to me. How long would you ignore me, I am still your husband,’ he pleaded and sat beside her on the cushion but she shifted away angrily.
‘Can’t you stay on your own Sly? Why do you have to be in and about my business?’ she hissed loudly. Thank Goodness Odinaka was soundly asleep.
‘I can’t Amy, your silence is killing me, I love you baby, I miss you so much.’ He shifted close to her.
‘Oh, come off it! I know how you act when you’re horny. If that’s what you want you should’ve just said it instead of lying to my face.’ She watched his face.
‘I am deeply sorry I hurt you Amy, I would never cheat on you again. Have this…’ he handed her some papers he’d gotten from his doctor.
‘What’s this’? She was hesitant.
‘test papers…I don’t have any S.T.D….i am clean Amy…I made a mistake and I promise never to repeat it again.’ He knelt before her.
‘if you want to have sex with me, just grab your condom. Remember our deal?’ She threw the papers to his face and walked deeper to the room…
She stopped and stared at the mirror…was she ready to do this?
‘Amy….’ Sly walked towards her and tried pulling her into his arms but she resisted.
She fell into the bed and supported her waist with a pillow.
‘What are you doing’? he asked bewildered by her actions.
‘Come and do it. Hurry!’ She spread her legs apart and beckoned to him impatiently.
‘Do what? What’s this Amy?’
‘What Doyin gave to you, just get done with it,’ she fixed her eyes to the wall.
‘Amaka, I don’t believe this’ he climbed the bed and reached her…
‘Don’t lay those hands on me…’ she jerked away

Love, Lies And Divorce – Episode 15

‘I can never take you like this, you’re my wife…my heart…queen of my world…I can never disrespect your body…it’s okay if you don’t wanna make love with me…I’ll be fine…I’ll prove to you that I cannot make the same mistake twice…I love you  Amy and I have a gift for you…’ he still remembered she had a photo shoot with some magazine, so he had decided to get her something special…
‘Amy’? he  took her hands as tears streamed down her cheeks…
She brushed the tears away  and quickly regained composure, no, he couldn’t see her like this, she was broken and vulnerable…
‘ I am so sorry…please forgive me…’ regret evident in his voice…
Without thinking, she pulled him closer and pressed her lips to his, he looked up at her dazed…was she sure of this?
She didn’t wait for his reply, she slid her wet tongue into his mouth and he fed hungrily on it…his hands pressed  her soft body against his solid chest…
Her hands roamed all over him  and she knew she couldn’t resist this passion…she unbuttoned his chest hurriedly and bit his ears lightly….
‘I love you Amy’ he breathed as he caressed her bare throat…. She was so beautiful to look at…her lips were swollen from kissing and her eyes lit with fire….
She didn’t say a word…she got out of her clothes eagerly and settled on the bed waiting for him to take  her….
‘are you sure about this? We can wait till we settle our issues…’ he paused as he cowered over her…
‘go ahead…’ she was getting impatient….his hands caressed her breasts and glided down to her lower abdomen…she went wild in ecstasy as she writhed underneath him….then he kissed her very slowly and settled comfortable between her tender laps…
His thrusts were maddening and she groaned savoring each thrust….how could he share something like that with another woman? Their special moment…
Her head spun round as the moment where lovers melted into one drew near…….Sly smiled as he fell beside her…he hoped Amaka had forgiven him….
He’d never made love to her in that manner….all he gave her that evening was from his heart….his only desire was to please her…
‘I want only you…’ he kissed her cheeks and reached for the pocket of his trouser which was strewn across the floor haphazardly
‘what’s this…’? she eyed the little box he handed her…all her hatred and resentment had returned…Sly had cheated on her with another woman…he’d made another woman moan for him …
‘I bought you new earrings for your photo shoot…there’re diamonds…open it…’ he smiled while watching her….he wished they could be happy again…
‘I don’t remember asking you for earrings…you can go give them to your secretary …I know she needs it  better than i…’ she bit her lip and raised the duvet to her chest…
‘how could you do something like this? Please don’t reject it…I bought is specially for you…’ his heart was breaking…he felt hurt by her rejection…
‘get out of my room Sly….i need to be alone…’ she  ordered him out, hands akimbo…
She had to hurt him the way he’d hurt her…he had to feel the pain of being lied to…that was the beginning…
‘Amy…’ he reached out for her but she pushed him away….
Her rejection felt like a blade that had pierced his heart….how on earth would he survive without her love?

He had returned very late on Saturday night….but she didn’t want to bother him because he was also taking the kids back to school as the celebration was over…
‘is  my Aisha asleep’? Abdul smiled as he walked out from the bathroom….his older kids had returned to the boarding house…only Aisha was left with them…
‘yes dear…’ Zainab replied …and searched her phone for messages  from Lola but she hadn’t seen none…
‘you don’t look  well my Zainabu….’he pecked her softly and settled beside her in the big bed….
‘I am fine…it’s just Lola…I think she’s hiding something from me…’ Zainab dropped her phone and faced the man she was in love  with….
‘oh, what do you think she’s hiding’? Abdul sat up quickly hoping Lola hadn’t told Zainab about their liason the night before…
‘that’s what I am saying…I feel she’s avoiding me and the girls…I wonder what Femi had done to her to wreck that emotionally…that guy is a devil, I feel he doesn’t deserve a woman like Lola….don’t you think’? she peered at her husband….
‘of course, he doesn’t deserve her….but  Lola is strong, she’ll pull through….now let’s talk about us…’ he felt greatly relieved ….
He wondered if she had made up her mind about him, they were both sexually attracted to each other and they had to explore that attraction…. He was willing to care for her…to love her like no man had ever done…but they had to play safe…
‘that reminds me, a young lady came looking for you…’ Zainab almost forgot about that disturbing visit…
‘A young lady’? he raised his brows….
‘Yes, she said she was your secretary …Farida….that was what she called herself…’ Zainab gazed upon his face intently…but she found it hard to read Abdul…
‘Oh, my sweetheart, I forgot to tell you about Farida Ahmad…she’s my new secretary and the niece of  Mallam  Abdulmajid  Ahmad….you remember  the man? He was my business associate for almost seven years before his untimely demise’? he hoped his wife bought this story…anger bubbled inside of him…what was that fool thinking coming over to his house like that?
He had to put Farida in her place like the cheap whore that she was…. He couldn’t let such a wayward girl cause trouble in his marriage.

‘Oh, I see…so how was your work with Alhaji Tako….?’ Zainab believed him totally but she wasn’t comfortable with her husband having such a beautiful secretary…
‘Very fine my love, Allah granted me utmost favor…do you know he introduced me to some of his wealthy friends? And they said I should work for them’? he reached for her mane of silky dark hair…
‘Marsha Allah! Praise to him….I love you completely Abdul…’ she pecked his cheeks softly…
‘I am planning a vacation….just me and you and Aisha…we should get to relax and spend more time together…’ he  tried to please her…
Zainab was no fool, she must have felt uncomfortable by Farida’s unannounced visit
‘where would we go my love?’ she was thrilled by the idea….
‘Anywhere you want…I could buy the whole world for you…you are very special to me…and nothing can change that…’ he sealed his promise with a light peck on her forehead…
‘when I grow older….would you marry another wife?’ she sat up briefly and gazed at him like the answer was written on his face…
‘no…I’ve promised you that before now…I’ll not bring another woman into this house…it’s just me and you and our lovely children….why would you even think that’? he knew Farida’s presence had caused her to think along that line…
‘nothing…would you make love to me tonight’? she rested her head on his chest…
‘not tonight my dear…I am fatigued, my muscles ache all over…we can do it in the morning eh’? he winked at her
He wasn’t being honest, gradually he was losing interest in Zainab’s body besides she complained most of the times he had asked them to try something different in the bedroom… …he needed something adventurous…he needed to tread on new grounds…
‘Alright, I am tired too…sleep well my husband….’ She squeezed his hands as he rose from the bed.
‘I would be in the living room working on some papers in case you need me….’ He yawned and rose to his feet happy for that sweet escape…
‘I won’t need you Abdul…just try and take some rest eh?’ she admired the strength  he had…the love that drove him to work extra hard to provide for her and her children…
‘I will be back soon…’ he closed the door gently and walked into the parlor…
He made himself a warm cup of tea and gulped from the mug still trying to figure out how he’ll deal with his obstinate girlfriend…why was Farida this rebellious?
Some minutes later, his phone buzzed and his heart stilled as he saw the caller identity…
Instinctively, he glanced around hoping Zee was safely asleep before he answered the call from her friend…
Had she finally accepted his proposal? Had she finally agreed to go out with him?

Love, Lies And Divorce – Episode 16

She had locked herself in her room the whole day. What was the point of being miserable when the cause of her misery was out there having fun?
‘I AM OUT, LOCK UP… WOULD BE COMING BACK IN A WEEK’S TIME, THEN WE’LL FINALIZE OUR DIVORCE PLANS.’ she cursed as she read the note he’d placed on the dining table. What happened to him knocking on her door and telling her about his pleasure trip with one of his many mistresses?
Love truly blinded people, else she would have noticed this part in Femi a long time ago and it wouldn’t have resulted in the mess she’d found herself…
As she made herself some coffee, she knew it was over between them forever. What Femi did to her was unforgivable and she had forgotten him.
The only thought that prevented her from doing something stupid like drowning herself in the bath tub were thoughts of that night, no man had ever touched her, caressed her, kissed her adored her like the way Abdul had done…
Though it had been hours since she’d seen him, she kept thinking about him…it was so wrong and she knew this…but she couldn’t help it…
Abdul had become her drug, her saving grace from her hell of a marriage…he made her forget all the pain of the six years she’d spent believing it will work out with Femi…when she thought of Abdul, her mind was at peace…even when her conscience pleaded with her…she couldn’t resist him…she wanted him…Zainab had been too good to her…but she couldn’t help it…the heart wanted what it wanted…
‘Hello….’ Her voice was shaky at first…she was even surprised  he’d picked her call…it wasn’t too late, the time was ten p.m and it had been a big risk…
But even if Zainab had seen her number on Abdul’s phone she wouldn’t have suspected anything which made her feel the more guilty…
‘Lola…how are you doing? Have you been crying again’? her voice was low and sad.
‘I am fine Abdul…can I see you tonight? I…’ she stuttered not knowing how to say those words.
‘Yes, you can see me… Are you okay?‘ he sipped hurriedly from the mug.
‘I  feel lonely…can you come over to the house? Femi travelled…you can tell Zee if you want…I just want to see you Abdul…’ She felt so helpless.
‘Alright, I’ll be on my way…’ he ended the call and headed straight to the room to check on Zee…it wasn’t that necessary to tell her anything…he could cook up some lies and tell her later…
Zainab wasn’t to be taken for granted, she the sharpest of minds.
As he stepped into the room to fetch his keys, he was pleased to see that she was already snoring and Aisha snuggled against her…
Without wasting much time, he slid on a black colored Jalabir  and picked some condoms into the pocket of his garment and rushed out.
The gateman, Shettima would cover for him, if Zainab woke up at any point in time…his heart beamed as he reached for his car… She’d finally accepted him, he couldn’t  wait to meet her again.

‘Abdul’! she was excited as she opened the gate for him…shocked that  he actually kept to his promise and  visited her…
‘My angel….’ He hurried out of the car and encircled his arms round her.
‘Welcome, did you tell  Zee?’ she whispered and looked up to him.
He inhaled the pureness of the air and stared at the sky that was blackened with darkness with little drops of fading stars.
‘No, how could you even think that? She may begin to harbor suspicions and I don’t want her to know about us yet…’ he licked his lips as the cool air had dried them…
‘Oh, I am sorry, I was thinking it was better you tell her…that something happened between I and Femi and you have to come pick me up alone…that would be less suspicious than you sneaking out of the house without letting her know about your whereabouts…’ she explained…
‘I didn’t think about that…let’s not argue about Zee…how have you been’? he finally asked as they stepped into the house…
‘just there…but I am over him now…’ she shrugged…
‘I don’t understand….’ She wore a lacy nightgown which was unapologetically transparent and showed off all her curves…the gleam of her nipples and her smooth skin…
‘Femi  wants a divorce…when he gets back from his trip, we’ll make it official…’ she inhaled deeply…
‘you’ll be fine…you have me with you…always remember that…’ he walked close to her and rubbed her hair softly…
‘I miss you Abdul….i’m happy you came…I need you to take this pain away…’ she looked up at him and dragged his hands down to her chest…
‘I’ll do that gladly…’ he leaned and glided his tongue over her neck…while his hands gently went over her beautiful body…
‘that feels good…’ she moaned as his hands rubbed the tip of tits…
‘yes…I’ll make you feel good…’ he replied and slid down her nightgown expertly…the lacy material fell to the floor revealing her beauty under the fluorescent…
‘you are adorable my angel….’ He was fascinated by the perfection of her two mounds and the firmness of her body…
Without saying more, he gulped them into his hands and folded one tit and sucked it hungrily…
His other hand searched the path on her laps carefully, till it found the place where all pleasure was buried…
‘Let’s go to my room Abdul…’ she was going crazy for him…
‘Fine…’ he scooped her into his arms expertly and they both left to sin.

The night was chill and loneliness hung in the air, he raised the phone to see who would be calling at such an odd hour….
He’d learnt to be comfortable in silence and loneliness  but since he set his eyes on her…he knew from that moment onward he’ll never be the same…
‘June….good evening are you okay’? his bestfriend was calling…
‘Hi Omale….it’s just that I’m stranded here and I can’t go back to the house…can I sleep over at your place’? she requested….
‘oh…okay, why not?’ he was confused, He was close to  June no doubt but she’d never slept over at his place before, not that he had anything in mind…how would her fiancé take it?
‘Alright, give me twenty minutes…what can I buy you’? she sounded charming now…
‘Anything you want June…hurry home it’s late…’ Omale sighed and fell on the couch…
Meeting her was very surprising, he’d waited for her call all day but she hadn’t rang him…was he too pushy? He wondered…maybe she needed space…
Like him, she was going through a healing process, losing one’s spouse wasn’t that easy…all those sweet memories would always come knocking on mind’s door…
‘Edima  Bassey…’ he mused and smile, he liked her name…she was truly beautiful and he couldn’t wait to know her more…
‘Come in, I left the door open for you…’ He called.
‘How is you doing’? June winked and trotted towards him.
