The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) on Saturday assured prospective Corps members that the delayed 2016 Batch ‘A’ Stream 2 orientation course will soon commence. In a statement issued by the scheme’s Head of Press Unit, Mrs Abosede Aderibigbe in Abuja, the scheme advised prospective Corps members to be on the look out for the new date which will soon be announced. The statement reads: The NYSC management wishes to inform prospective Corps members that, based on the assurance received from the Federal Government regarding release of funds, the 2016 Batch ‘A’ (Stream II) Orientation course will commence soon. Prospective Corps members are, therefore, requested to watch out for specific date for commencement of the exercise, which will be announced as soon as all necessary logistics are put in place. The Federal Government on Saturday released the highly anticipated list of recovered loot. In a statement by the Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the government revealed the recoveries were made between May 29, 2015 and May 25, 2016. The government gave the breakdown of the loot as N78, 325,354,631.82; $185,119,584.61; £3,508,355.46  and €11, 250. A conversion of the funds using the official exchange rate of the Central Bank of Nigeria, the amount adds up to N115,792,760,499. The Muhammadu Buhari-led government added that a separate amount of cash and assets worth over N2tn had also been seized. However, the properties and cash are under legal contention. The assets and cash seized under interim forfeiture totalled: $9bn, N126bn, £2.4m and €303,399. The Federal Government on Thursday declared that it does not have the right to sanction power generation and distribution companies operating in Nigeria. It specifically stated that it lacked the moral right to penalise the firms due to the fact that many government agencies were heavily indebted to the various companies. The Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, who disclosed this in a statement issued by the spokesperson of the power ministry, Mr. Timothy Oyediji, in Abuja, argued that the government cannot act arbitrarily and stressed that it must follow due process else it would have to contend with multiple court cases. ABUJA – The Federal Government has scrapped post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examinations, UTME, as a pre-condition to gaining admission into universities in the country. The government and stakeholders in education sector also pegged 180 as benchmark for 2016 admission into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education to improve quality of education in Nigeria. ‎These decisions were reached at the 2016 Combined Policy Meeting on Admissions to Universities, Polytechnics and other higher institutions in Nigeria.
